DO BURGLARS HAVE A BULLSEYE ON YOUR HOME?

Sometimes, people in the suburbs think they are immune from burglaries. Over 34 years in real estate, I have encountered a number of people who regularly leave their doors unlocked. Many cannot even find their keys anymore. These folks believe they live in a “safe” neighborhood and nothing will happen there. Nothing could be further from the truth. Burglars target “safe” neighborhoods often because those homes can appear more affluent and therefore more productive for the criminals. When I list a property, I insist that the sellers keep the doors locked, even if that is not their normal habit. We normally know the buyers we are working with to some degree. But often a buyer will call us off of a sign or an internet ad. We will meet them at your home because it is our job to expose your home to people. (I insist that a buyer have a counselling session in an office, a restaurant or their home prior to showing them other peoples’ homes-not all agents do.) Although criminal activity is very rare during a showing, if the potential “buyer” sees an agent enter a house without a key, a big target just went up on your house. Last week, Krystal Rogers-Nelson of Rismedia, wrote a great article on protecting your home from burglaries at all times, not just when it is for sale. You can find the article on my website, MnhomesbyDave.com under the Real Estate News Tab. It is entitled “6 Things Burglars Don’t Want You to Know.” Thanks for reading.
